Running Paper is an AI marking platform for schools. You print the assessment from the platform, students complete it by hand as normal, you bulk scan the pile into one file (up to 1000 pages), and Running Paper sorts the pages, marks the work, writes feedback and builds your question-level analysis.
AI marking uses artificial intelligence to read student work, assess it against a mark scheme and produce marks and feedback that a teacher reviews before anything is released.
The Running Paper workflow has six steps:
1. Set up a worksheet. A worksheet is the question paper and mark scheme together. Upload a past paper PDF with its mark scheme, reuse one already shared in your department, school or trust, or build one from scratch.

Yes, we take the privacy and security of your students' data very seriously. All student submissions and personal data are securely stored and processed in compliance with UK GDPR and other applicable data protection laws.
No. We don't train any large language models on student data. Student work and personal information stay private and are never used for model training.
This isn't only a privacy commitment - it's a copyright one. The DfE's guidance on generative AI in education is explicit that student essays and homework are likely to be copyright material, and that schools must not allow students' original work to be used to train AI models without permission from the student or their parent. Because we don't train on it, that question doesn't arise for your school.

The detail your DPO will want is the relationship: your school is the data controller and we act as the data processor. We process student data strictly on your instructions and under our contractual obligations, in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Our core infrastructure, including our database and all stored student work, is hosted in the United Kingdom, with some processing in the European Economic Area under the UK's adequacy regulations. For AI marking and feedback, a limited set of marking data may be processed in the United States by our AI providers. Any processing outside the UK and EEA takes place under UK GDPR safeguards (the UK-US Data Bridge or the EU Standard Contractual Clauses with the UK Addendum).

Yes. When you create an assessment, you set a feedback reading age for each class, so the feedback students receive is written at a level they can actually act on.
